Attraction Marketing: Be Who You Say You Are

dd7t3434_11qfff3fgx_bThe best way to be recognized as a leader is to act and be one. There are two ways of managing people, and it is often summarized as the carrot and stick principle used in making a donkey move – that is, you either use the stick to whip the donkey into moving in the direction that you want, or dangle the carrot in front of it to get it moving. If you put yourself in the position of the donkey, which would you prefer: the offer of a reward, or being beaten into submission? Does it not make sense that you would rather do something to gain something, than do something just to avoid pain?

Being a Carrot

A carrot is attractive to a donkey because it knows that it taste good and it will keep him nourished. If a donkey follows the carrot, it will be for reasons that they would want, and not because you made them want it. In the same manner, if you are someone who shows other people that you know things and that you can get things done, they will follow you because you have something that they want.

How to BE a Leader

If you want to be a leader in your field, you have to build up your background. Look at the best skills that you have and improve on them, but also remember to upgrade the other skill sets that you will need to keep your business going. For example, you have worked with a manufacturing company that makes computers for a certain number or years. That really will qualify you as an expert on the field, but that does not mean you should go and set up your own shop just yet.

Selling Your Stuff

Having a product to sell is only part a small part of the business; you also need a plan or strategy in selling it. You also need people in your organization to do certain functions. This is where more studying comes in: you have to learn how to handle the people you attract by being an expert.

Again, it all goes back to the carrot: you really do have to give something back to the people who choose to believe in you and your capabilities. You will not lead them on forever, or give them empty promises. BUT at the same time, you do have to let them know that if they want the reward, they will have to do a bit of walking towards it. The most important thing is that you lay out your plans to them clearly, and that you never betray the trust that they so wholeheartedly put in you.
